Shape It Up!

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

shape-ups

I have worked in retail for 30 years, that is a incredible amount of time to constantly be on ones feet and to be walking or running around. Buying department store bargain basement shoes does not make a very good case for healthy feet in a retail setting. About two months ago, out of the blue, my left heel started giving me sharp pains halfway into a work shift. The symptoms became more pronounced and predictable as each day wore on, wake up with a stiff foot, painful to walk on, after a few minutes it got bearable, later on in the day it got sore and uncomfortable. Anytime spent during the day off of the feet were welcome but getting up was painful. After some research, I determined that I had Plantar Fasciitis. I tried the various Dr Scholl’s padded insole inserts, which provided minimal relief, I went after those $48 Dr Scholl’s custom orthotics that we have seen advertised TV, where you go stand on a kiosk stand that recommends which orthotic to buy. At least I know I have low arches!! This orthotic helped a bit more, but I found something better, albeit pricier.

The Skechers Shape-Ups, see the picture above, is a excellent shoe for those of us with sore feet, legs and backs. I wont describe the shoes construction as you can research it yourself, but to walk in a pair, you feel as if you are walking on those thick gym mats you might recall from school, which were used for wrestling and tumbling. I have absolutely no foot and heel pain, no leg pain or other discomforts, the first day walking in them was like night versus day.

I recommend these shoes for anyone with foot, leg and back pain!

Smoking Part Two!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Well, my last blog post reflected my intentions and need to quit smoking. I figured an update is at hand.. I failed, but I have managed to cut myself back big time, as much as 50–60%, by banning myself from smoking in the house, hence not even when I am using the computer..

I fully intend to try again but have not set a date for when I will try again.

Smoking

Friday, February 26th, 2010

I have been smoking cigarettes for just over 30 years and came to the conclusion that I must quit, first and foremost, for health reasons and secondly for financial reasons. My state has the lowest tobacco tax in the country and the legislature feels guilty about it and has been trying for the past few years to raise it. They will raise the tax, budget some government service on the new tax revenue, people will quit, revenue falls, service funding falters, its the same old story. My state puts a 7 cent per pack tax on cigarettes, the legislature wants to raise it to 57 cents per pack, the state education secretary wants it to go up to $1.34 per pack. So the smokers are going to help fund the state schools and colleges, if the education secretary gets his way, the legislature will write their budgets accordingly. As noted, this so called new cool source of revenue will falter if smokers stop being smokers and the legislature will not build in any safety measures if the revenue source begins to dry up and it will. What sin taxes, like those placed on tobacco, beer and booze should do, is have their revenue placed into the general fund to retire state debt, therefore you avoid budget shortfalls in the other more meaningful government programs. I guess the smokers in the state should be thankful that they are not living in New York or New Jersey, both states competing to see which one can have the highest tax on tobacco and both seemingly raising their taxes on a annual basis. Taxes do appear to get Democrats sexually excited!

I have always bought my cigarettes ahead, I made what I thought was a decision to quit smoking back in December, I had several and I mean several packs on hand, then I just stopped buying them. The supply ran out finally on February 20th 2010, at which point I got up on 02/21/2010 and slapped a patch on my shoulder. Some more background is in order.. Prior to any decision to quit, I had imbibed in for several months those Nicotine lozenges, at work. This cut my smoking back considerably at work, no more running out to the front sidewalk whenever I was bored or having a nic-a-fit. Working in retail like I do, it did get frustrating to go out, light a fresh cigarette and then get called back in because someone was living their life on the telephone.

Anyhow, as things turned out, I did the bulk of my smoking here at home when I was in front of the computer, often chain smoking one after the other, so I figure that I smoked a pack and a half on a work day, and perhaps two and a half packs if I was off.

On Sunday 02/21/2010, I was miserable, even though I was receiving measured doses of nicotine from the patch, I found myself thinking of holding a cigarette in my hand and puffing, I thought I had the bases covered, toothpicks, hand exercise devices and mints. Sitting here at the computer, I found no motivation to do anything on it, well actually any of them, I have a few..

I decided to forego the patch the next day, and I decided to use just the lozenges, so I went to the store to reinforce my existing supply of lozenges after getting off of work. (The work day was fine). I decided to get the 2mg lozenges, a pill splitter and yes, I broke down and purchased 3 packs of cigarettes.

The 2 mg lozenges are for later, so I took my existing 4 mg lozenges and split them in 2, I use these at work. I saved several of them and split them into fourths for here at the desk.

On Monday night I did break down and have a cigarette, even after only 36 hours by that time, it tasted so good.. (read real nicotine rush)

Of that first pack, it took me to Friday 02/26/10 to smoke it, which of course is not too bad when compared to 30 to 50 smokes a day. This despite the fact that I fell off of the wagon so soon, but my case is not unusual.

What I failed to do is modify my behavior at home, like I did for work and I should have done so before trying to quit. So for those times when I have to have a real smoke, I am forcing myself outside into the garage or the driveway to smoke, I figure that eventually I will tire of this and have the behavioral mindset in place.

I also got one of those electronic cigarettes see this link here.

Hopefully I can really whip this thing for good, but I really can grasp the behavioral part of the addiction and understand why it is so hard to quit.

Black Friday 2009 – The Madness Approaches

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

The day after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the Christmas Season, but it is a special day in which retailers swing open their doors at obscenely early hours with deals and bargains for shoppers to snap up as Christmas Gifts. The day is known as Black Friday, known as such because it is the day retailers hope to turn their balance sheets from a negative red to a positive black.

Some stores will even open on Thanksgiving Day, while others will open at Midnight but usually no later than 6am on Black Friday.

We go from a day to give thanks into a season in which we give. However if one ever has worked in the retail business on a Black Friday, the retail worker is the Gazelle and the customers are a pack of Hyenas in a feeding frenzy.

I work in retail and have done so for almost 30 years, I can remember when Black Friday was a very busy day, but nothing like it has become, over the course of my retail career. I am lucky this year, I get to sleep in and come in during the afternoon hours when most of the frenzy and frothing has subsided.

The problem with Black Friday is that customers do not comprehend the fact that quantities of whatever special are limited and that the entire planets inventory of whatever item was not shipped to their town to their intended store. Camping outside the store in a sleeping bag for untold hours prior to opening does not immediately guarantee one the item they sought, depending on ones place in line and how many other fellow customers want the same item versus how many of said item the store actually has in stock.

Unfortunately by the time this black Friday has passed, I expect to hear the same horror stories in the news that have been pervasive in past years. These will include:

  1. Customers trampling other customers or store associates.
  2. Customer on Customer/Sales Associate assaults.
  3. Customers snatching sale items out of the hands or buggies of other customers.
  4. Snatch and grab shoplifting.
  5. Check and Credit fraud.

I guess I paint customers, the life blood of the business I am in, in a bad light, but first hand experience on this day teaches one to be wary. On this day, each year, customers seem to leave their humanity and civility behind, after having given thanks the prior day as they prepare to give. It give a new meaning to the saying ”every man for himself”. The sad part of all of this is, these customers on this day in particular don’t realize they are behaving badly, everyone else is..

Picking On The Disabled

Monday, September 7th, 2009

chirnside

This is a fella I have over the years had contentious debate with in a Amateur Messaging Network. His name is Wayne Chirnside and to see his writings, you would think he sees himself as the most successful person in the world. He lives on Social Security Disability in the Southeastern USA and the above photo is his booking photograph from an arrest for Criminal Trespassing in 2007.

This man claims that because of the contentious debates he and I have and had, that I am somehow picking on the disabled. I am still trying to figure out how disagreeing with this guy constitutes picking on the disabled?

Well there is the constant parading by him of every single ailment that he has, and that his bad back which is what qualifies him for SSDI is the fault of the Police because they made him run from them. It could be the constant bragging about heroic feats from his able bodied past, most unbelievable or which could be construed as contributing factors to his current disability.

Waynes problem is that he reveals way too much detail on his life both past and present and what is worse, in painstaking detail as if he is publishing a biography. Don’t ask him where he was born, it wont be a simple answer as city and state, you will get a presentation on the cities history and what it represents.

When you debate controversial subject matter with strangers that produce an adversarial footing, the one card one should keep close to ones vest is the one that contains that information which your debating opponents can use against you. Ordinarily most people should ignore personal information as a tool to torment a debating opponent with, that is until the person after having revealed such personal information freely starts casting out or passing judgement towards others with no room to talk himself.

If you are going to pass judgement onto others its best to have a leg to stand on.

So I guess not believing the tall tales, calling him out on them and just disagreeing with him, constitutes picking on the disabled? I guess its true, the pen is mightier than the sword?

Windows XP Versus Vista And Soon Seven

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

I encounter people both at work and in hobby whom are all up in arms over Windows Vista, and insist on sticking with XP or better put, wanting to purchase a machine that came with Vista and put XP on it.

I remember when Windows XP was released, for an operating system it had robust device driver support, lots of eye candy and it brought a version of Windows to the masses which was not reliant on the DOS Kernel. While there was Windows NT and Windows 2000, those operating systems were not in their day, marketed to the masses, but more towards businesses. However with XP’s debut you had plenty of problems with older software being unable to run under it, although said software functioned under Windows 95, 98 and ME. I remember people decrying XP as a piece of junk, being unable to realize that the underlying architecture of Windows XP was far different and superior to that which underlied Windows 95 thru ME.

Windows XP has had quite a run, it went from being a scorned operating system to one people cling onto like a Teddy bear, it also bears the distinction of being one of the most vulnerable and targeted operating systems for viruses and other malware. Alot of this has to do with the fact that Microsoft deviated from their normal release schedule for new OS’s, they gave XP an additional three years of being the only player on stage in the wonderful world of Windows.

In comes Windows Vista, and in comes deja-vu, all the bitching all over again. Major changes in the interface and API’s and more software and hardware got broken. Other nuances Microsoft put in to protect the OS from the ignorance of the operator became annoyances etc.

Mostly word of mouth bitching and moaning gave Windows Vista its bad rap but whatever bad rap Vista took, is not solely at the feet of Microsoft. Windows Vista had a extremely long and often delayed development cycle, during which time developers and hardware vendors had plenty of time to update their programs and device drivers to work with Vista, sadly many of them did not. By the time Vista got released, people could not find device drivers that worked with their printers and other peripherals and they found out that some software would no longer work.

It is easy to blame Microsoft, they are the authors of the worlds dominant operating system, they have gotten hit with anti-trust lawsuits and its founder got filthy rich despite now being heavy into philanthropy. I am not saying that everything Microsoft did was right, but on the other hand, those whom stood a chance of challenging them competitively did everything wrong. Those whom hate Microsoft cannot be convinced otherwise, but if you look at the ads on TV lately, it looks like Steve Jobs is undoing some of his past mistakes, I will let you read into that what you will, however one could say Microsoft stole ideas over the years, perhaps they did, but the one thing they did right was marketing.

In the here and now, one can no longer look back at XP as an option that will remain viable for much longer..

  • Retail Versions are no longer available except for those copies still sitting in retail inventories, Microsoft has stopped shipping them.
  • Except for Netbooks, XP no longer comes pre-installed on new PC’s and Laptops.
  • Microsoft is no longer updating XP except for critical updates.

As time moves on, these limitations will come more pronounced, just as they did when Microsoft sunsetted Windows 95 thru ME. This day is approaching for XP.

Vista has been out for just over two years and has reached a maturity in the same amount of time it took for XP to mature, XP didn’t really mature until Service Pack 2.

However having said all of this, the next release of Windows is around the corner, possibly a release date in late October?  It will be more based on the Vista architecture than anything else, so the good news is that if your hardware and software works under Vista, it will work under Windows 7.

So here is my advice, for what it is worth..

  • If you are running XP and are looking to upgrade your machine, it might be worth the wait to see what Fall 2009 has to offer.
  • If you are running XP and have to upgrade, for whatever reasons, Vista has matured enough to be relied upon, some of its annoyances can be toned down, but I don’t recommend doing so if you aren’t computer literate. Simply look at the software you use and the hardware you have and make sure the publishers have Vista drivers and patches available, at this stage in the game. most do. However with some older hardware like Printers, some vendors have elected to sunset some of their products and no longer develop drivers for newer OS’s, but remember that is a decision the vendor made, not Microsoft. I do own a HP 5850 WIFI printer, HP decided to not make a Vista driver for it, but they did elaborate that Vista included a driver for a earlier model (go figure) which did work.
  • If you are running XP and all is well, you got plenty of resources and reliability, stay put for as long as possible, but don’t wait past the time Microsoft sunsets all support for XP.
  • If you are already running Vista, there may be no real reason to jump to Windows 7 unless you simply desire to be on the bleeding edge?

Just remember that every OS has its growing pains….

Windows 95, there were 3 incarnations of it, A,B and C.

Windows 98, there were 2 incarnations, remember Second Edition?

Windows ME, well ok, they never should have released this one, a Windows 98 Third Edition would have been better.

Windows XP, there were three Service Packs.

Windows Vista, Service Pack One already out there, with a second one around the corner.

Windows Seven wont be any different. This time next year, I will be laughing when people start bemoaning it for being junk with such criticism being misplaced.

Oh Well…

Grace Is Gone

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Not too many movies catch my eye anymore, they simply dont make them like they used to. I am not much of a theatre goer, instead I simply wait for movies to come out on the cable movie channels such as HBO, CINEMAX, SHOWTIME et al. I caught a movie on Cable last night that caught my attention and riveted me to both that channel and my seat. GRACE IS GONE, starring John Cusack, Cusack plays the husband of a female army Sgt, with whom he has two daughters with, 8 and 12 years old respectively. He learns that his wife died in combat while in Iraq, and struggles with the emotions of the loss and has not broke the news to his daughters yet. He takes time off work, takes his daughters out of school and they go on a road trip. Their final destination is an amusement park in Florida his youngest daughter has always wanted to go visit, the oldest daughter is confused and slightly suspicious of her fathers unusual behavior and reasons to go on a trip, in the middle of a school year. The impression is given that the father has always been aloof in dealing with the two children without the help of his wife and their mother, but throughout the road trip, you can clearly see that he is truly on his own bonding with his two girls. He maintains the ruse that their mother is still alive throughout the whole road trip, up til the time they are driving back home from the amusement park. If you like this sort of movie, tear jerking and all, see this movie.

Consumer Reviews

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

The January 2009 issue of PCWorld magazine has a brief article dealing with consumer reviews, regarding products and services.

Their main focus dealt with faked or biased reviews that could have been placed there by shills of the company providing the product or service but there are other types of reviews to deal with.

I never put full faith in a consumer review when looking for a product or service, but I do pay attention to them.

Never accept a review that sounds as well worded as the commercial that peddled the product, chances are the review is planted, and be on the lookout for multiple reviews with the same traits, especially if they sound like Billy Mays wrote them.

Never accept a negative review at face value, be it one or many if they do not describe in any coherent detail why the product deserves a negative report, remember negative reviews can also be planted there by shills for the “competition”.

Everyone has different needs for a product or service and not everyone uses them to the same degree, then there is know-how and patience to be factored in before you accept a review for what it is.

Some people have unrealistic expectations for a product and will judge it with those standards in mind, dont believe a negative review for a $20 coffeepot if the reviewer sounds like they expected it to perform the same as a $99 Braun or Bunn model, when you spend $20 for a coffeepot, you are getting a $20 coffeepot.

Some people are not technically savvy and do not know how to fully utilize a product or service or lack any reasonable amount of patience to use or understand that product or service. therefore these people will typically slam or blame the product for their own ignorance or shortcomings. Yes there are people in this world whom have no business operating much less owning anything dealing with lets say technology.

The most coherent and trustworthy reviews I have read are on newegg.com’s website, I havent seen one that I could not believe.

Just because someone describes a negative doesnt mean it will be bad for you, remember how someone used the product might be why they gave it a bad mark, which in reality will never mirror how you will use the product. For example a camera memory card might have slow write speeds, a negative for a professional photographer, not a big deal for a home/hobby/casual photographer.

Avoid reviews that seem more inflammatory or excess praise, somewhere in the middle you can find the truthful and reasonable reviews.

A trustworthy review allows the reviewer to outline the pro’s and con’s, I avoid the ones where the reviewer couldnt keep the con out of the pro part, sarcasm turns me off in this regard. A trustworthy review will be well thought out and written without sounding like a endorsement or condemnation.

Reviews are a good tool for making purchasing decisions, just dont put all your eggs into that basket, be wary.

Pranks And Consequences

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I read a story about a Willmar Minnesota man being charged with assault after spraying some teens with Fox Urine..

Read the Story Here .

Seems he got a little tired of having toilet paper being draped all over his yard as he was a common target for teenage pranksters. So using night vision goggles and a super-soaker filled with the Fox Piss, he decided to get the upper hand on them one night and decided to douse the teens with the fox pee.

As the story outlines, the man was accosted from behind and a struggle ensued, apprarently someones finger got broken, the homeowner is the one whom reported the incident to the police.

What I dont understand is why the man is getting charged..

Lets look at some facts here:

  • Just because teens will be teens and commit pranks, does not mean homeowners “HAVE TO” endure these pranks.
  • Every homeowner has a right to defend their property, I doubt any of these teens pay this mans mortgage or property taxes.
  • If this had happened in a more urban setting, these teens could have faced the business end of a firearm.
  • If the teens felt they had a right to trespass on the property of another, then the property owner had every right to make the teens experience more memorable by giving them a smell they would not soon forget.
  • If the teens were choking this man, as the story suggests, then a broken finger isnt nothing.

When I was a teen, I was very much involved with pranks, toilet papering, throwing snowballs at peoples doors, knocking on doors/ringing doorbells and running etc.. I used to be a newspaper delivery boy for a Washington DC area newspaper, afternoon deliveries during the week and morning deliveries on the weekends, on the weekends I was generally delivering my route between 5am and 7am. I decided to be cute by flattening the mail box of a person on one of the streets on my route, he was not a customer of mine, but I faithfully flattened it every saturday and sunday morning over the course of a few weeks. He always straightened it out and in that time, once replaced it, yet I still flattened it out, even the replacement. Eventually he did the math and figured it all out that it was happening on a set pattern and not randomly. So one morning he got up early and waited, sure enough I come along and I flatten the mailbox again, this time he popped up from behind some bushes and busted me.. He was rather cool about it, he could have called the police and would have been right to do so, he went on to tell me that when he was my age, he did the same sort of things.. He made a deal with me, he gave me 2 weeks to give him $15 to cover the cost of a new mailbox, in return he would not tell my customers on the street or my parents, DEAL! I gave him the money within a week and from that point forward I grew up and my prank days were done. He even subscribed to the newspaper!!

With this toilet papering/Fox pee incident, there is no way the victim should be charged given the facts I read all this does is send the message to teenagers that they can carry out these pranks with no fear of punishment be making their victims responsible for their pranks.

Slavery Lesson

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

There is a story of a 7th Grade Social Studies teacher in New York State, using visual and physical aids to teach her students about the slave trade that plagued the history of the USA. Seems that the teacher was white and she used duct tape to bind the hands and feet of two of her black female students, then told them to lay down under their desks, so that she could get her students to visualize what it must have been like for the real slaves aboard slave ships as they crossed the Atlantic.

When the two female students got home that day, they cried and complained to their parents about the incident.

Follow This Link to read the story.

There is no doubt in my mind that there was no malicious intent behind this incident, but perhaps poor judgement.

I do suppose that this teacher could have imparted her lesson by narrating it to her class and asking each student to picture themselves lieing down on the floor being bound by rope and chains?

Barring the above, she should have asked if anyone wanted to volunteer, or perhaps went to her peers and asked what they thought of it as a teaching aid?

Oh well shouda, couda wouda..

You got the mother of one of the children screaming bloody murder and the G-D NAACP in the act now.

I wonder if artists and actors being asked to portray horrible things get emotionally scarred everytime they do something?
